Red Velvet cake has been a favorite of ours since we were first introduced to it over 10 years ago. Our wedding cake topper a red velvet flavored and we can’t resist it when we see it.
We first saw a cake pop recipe using a different flavored cake mix and right away thought red velvet is what we should try instead. Low and behold it was fantastic! I’ve also never been a fan of cake pops, (I thought the stick was kind of useless). So we made these without it and love them so much! We now make these every Christmas eve and share with family and neighbors. It’s now a holiday family tradition.
These cake balls are easy to make and the kids will love mixing the cream cheese with the cake. Their hands get messy but who doesn’t love a mess when it’s yummy cake?
This recipe only takes a few ingredients; red velvet cake mix, 4 chocolate melt containers, water, vegetable oil and eggs.
All you have to do is cook the cake using the instructions on the box. Then crumble it up with your hands and mix in the cream cheese frosting.
Take a tablespoon worth of cake and roll it into a ball then place it on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. If you let the kids roll them, that’s half the fun. Then they tend to look more like the photo below, which is perfectly okay! Freeze the cake balls on the tray for 1-2 hours or refrigerate for 3-4 hours.
Remove the cake ball tray from freezer, melt chocolate per directions on containers then dip cake balls in one by one to fully cover them. Place back onto the cookie sheet, add any decorations and let dry.
That’s it! Easy right? You can switch out the red velvet cake mix for any type of cake flavor but we found this one was a favorite.
This recipe is even award winning! We won first place at a bake off for the Ritz Carlton a few years back. We also love sharing our treats with local firefighters, mom groups and when we host a get together.
So go on and try these fall in love with them just as much as we did.
Yummiest Red Velvet Cake Balls
MeeshEquipment
- Oven
Ingredients
- 1 box red velvet cake mix (cook as directed on box in a 13x9 pan)
- 1 can cream cheese frosting (16 oz)
- 3 containers chocolate melts (milk or white chocolate)
- 3-4 sheets wax paper
Instructions
- Mix and cook red velvet cake as directed on box in a 13 x 9 cake pan
- After the cake is cooked, cool completely.
- Transfer cooled cake to a large-sized mixing bowl and crumble it up using your hands
- Now the messy part. Add 1 can of cream cheese frosting into bowl with the cake. You can use a spoon but it is sometimes easier with your hands.
- Scoop mixture with a teaspoon or mini ice cream scooper and roll into little balls. ( I find the teaspoon works better) Place each cake ball onto a cookie sheet pan lined with wax paper.
- Once all the cake mix is rolled into balls, put the cookie tray into the freezer for a few hours. This makes them easy to dip into the chocolate without falling apart.
- Melt chocolate in microwave as directed on container. Make sure to use 50% power or you could end up with brownies instead of chocolate melts.
- Quickly dip and roll cake balls into the chocolate and then place back onto the wax paper. The chocolate will harden so work quickly to use all chocolate in container.
- Add any toppings such as sprinkles or candies before the cake ball cool.
- Wait till cake balls are cool and firm to eat.
