Over the past year, my love for gardening and DIY projects as grown so much that I’m always thinking of new things to make for my home and garden. I liked the idea of making some sun catchers but since we have such strong winds here, off and on now all year long, that I didn’t want to do anything glass that would hanging. This DIY Sun Catcher is simple and very customizable. You can make them any color, depending on the stones you have, and you can do any size glass bowl or jar. Make a few in different colors and sizes for a variety of beautiful pieces for your garden. (post contains affiliate links)
This project is easy but a little time consuming. All you need are some glass signing stones you can purchase at Michaels here. These are great because they come in many colors and being flat on one side makes them easy to glue on to anything. They are also beautiful when the sunlight shines on them.
If you try to use white school glue the stones will not stick. Hot glue will not work either because with this being put out in the sun, the heat will melt the glue making the stones slide off. I recommend getting a one oz tube of Silicone Glue.
I got a glass bowl for under $5 to use as the orb. I started by turning over the glass bowl so it’s upside down. Start with a little bit of glue on one of the stones and put it in the center of the bottom of the jar.
Continue this while making circles around the bowl. Make sure the stones are touching each other when placed.
Once you finished the bottom flat part of the bowl, get any plastic cereal bowl or soup bowl to hold your glass bowl while you will be gluing on the stones. Tip the bowl slightly so the stones don’t slide off while wet.
I found that I could only do a row or two at time because the stones will slide off if the bowl is not tipped and until the stones are a bit adhered. If you have to do one side more than the other so you can get more done at one time, it should work fine.
After all the stones have been placed, make sure it is completely dried. Flip upside down and place in your garden. Since this is glass, make sure to keep away from where children play or something can hit it and break it.
