Applesauce Oatmeal Squares

Wouldn’t it be great if you can make a dessert that tastes just like apple pie but was easy as pie to make?  This Applesauce Oatmeal Squares recipe is just that.  It is only a few ingredients and it doesn’t take long to bake. The girls love eating this warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Here's what's in this recipe.
  • Applesauce: We like to use a no added sugar kind of applesauce and found the Motts brand is best for this.
  • Quick Oats: You can buy any kind of quick oats. We used old fashioned.  Here is another kind you can use, Organic Oats.
  • Butter: We use salted butter.  If you use unsalted then be sure to add a pinch of salt.
  • Brown Sugar: Light Brown Sugar is our sugar of choice but a dark brown sugar should work as well.
  • Flour: We use regular all purpose flour.
How to Make Applesauce Oatmeal Squares

Preheat oven to 325 and spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick spray. Cut butter into small cubes. In a blender, add butter, brown sugar, and flour. Pulse only a few times till small chunks form.Add oat and cinnamon into blender. Pulse 3 short times.

In another small bowl, add applesauce and extra cinnamon (1 tsp). Pour half of mixture into baking dish and press down covering the entire bottom. Pour applesauce mixture on top of crumb mixture in baking dish and spread evenly. Pour the rest of the crumb mixture on top of the applesauce and cover the entire baking dish.

Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool and enjoy!

Substitute the Applesauce

Not into applesauce?  You can easily substitute the applesauce with a blueberry, strawberry pie mixture.  You can also smash bananas and mix it with cinnamon for a spread. Mixed berries smashed would work nicely as well.

Storage and Reheating

Storing: Make sure any left over squares are stored in an air tight container and put in the refrigerator.  This recipe makes enough for 8-10 people (depending on the size you cut each bar.

Reheating: Reheat this dish in the microwave till it’s desired temperature.  Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the top and enjoy!
