If you are like me (or any other person on this planet) then you probably played with legos as kid. You might even have those fond memories of your parents screaming, when they accidentally stepped on one that you left out. I always found that funny. Maybe that’s just me. While the bricks haven’t changed much in the 62 years since they were invented, there’s quite a lot more to be excited about today, for both you and your kids.
I stopped playing with legos at some point during my teenage years, thinking, “Those toys are for kids. I’m an adult now. Give me my N64.” It wasn’t until attending San Diego Comic Con one year, when I realized there was still quite a craze for legos. I’m not exaggerating when I say that a riot started when the Lego booth announced they had run out of their free minifigures. Turns out those little things were going for $500 on Ebay. As their presence got larger and larger each year, so did their lines. The thing that got me back into them was that they now had licenses with a lot of different studios. This meant that they made Lego sets for Star Wars, Harry Potter, Disney, and even Back to the Future (my absolute favorite).
I first started making these sets on my own, but then my oldest daughter got interested in playing with them too. Building Legos with my daughters is the best feeling.
Amazon has the best LEGO sets to Build with kids
If you’re looking for the best deals and exclusives, then Amazon is the place to buy. Every once in awhile, they will even have a set that is exclusive to Amazon. They frequently have deals on their sets too, which is rare to find anywhere else, as legos rarely go on sale or are excluded from sales at places like Target and Walmart (read that fine print in the next target toy ad).
This is one of our favorite sets. A massive lego set with 3955 pieces, light up mechanics and every detail you can find from the first Home Alone movie. Jewels loved putting this one together and it’s a lego set that will be displayed year round.
Lego Creator Expert Carousel 10257 Building Kit (2670 Pieces)
This was the first set I built with my older daughter. She was (and still is) really into Merry-Go-Rounds and this set was on sale at Amazon, so I pulled the trigger. It was a super fun build and my daughter enjoyed seeing how all the mechanical parts moved inside. We added the optional power box to make it move on its own.
LEGO Star Wards VIII BB-8 (1106 Piece)
My daughters love the Star Wars droids. In fact, BB-8 was one of the first words my younger daughter said. Yes, we breed Star Wars nerds here. This was another fun build with moving parts inside that bring out BB-8’s “thumbs-up” lighter and parts that move and tilt his head.
LEGO Ideas 21317 Disney Steamboat Willie Building Kit (751 Piece)
My kids are also big Disney fans (who isn’t?). We are all just big Disney kids, right? This set pays homage to Mickey’s first cartoon, Steamboat Willy. The S.S. Willie is on wheels that move the paddle wheels on each side as the boat moves. The steam stacks also bounce up and down as it moves, just like in the cartoon. This is a great set for any fan of the OG Mickey.
LEGO Star Wars: The Last Jedi Porg 75230 Building Kit (811 Pieces)
Who doesn’t love Porgs? Before Baby Yoda, Porgs were the cute Star Wars characters that everyone wanted, even Chewbacca. This was a quick and fun build and the kids love pushing the porg’s tail, which activates it’s moving wings and mouth.
LEGO Star Wars Attack of the Clones Yoda 75255 with Lightsaber (1,771 Pieces)
We bought Master Yoda on sale through Amazon awhile ago. There is now a similar version of this set for Baby Yoda (which we will probably get when it goes on sale). The kids like Baby Yoda more (which is an understatement).
LEGO Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker D-O 75278 (519 Pieces)
As previously mentioned, our kids love the Star Wars droids. D-O is no exception. They love playing with him, although the movement is limited on this one. Only his head spins and tilts. I would have liked to see the base wheel spin too.
LEGO Star Wars The Mandalorian Razor Crest 75292 (1,023 Pieces)
The Mandalorian might just be the best show on television right now. And the Razor Crest is one of the coolest ships in the Star Wars universe. This was a really fun build with the kids. They love how the entire lower half of the ship opens up and how it fires its laser canons. And how cute is that Baby Yoda minifigure?
LEGO BrickHeadz Star Wars The Mandalorian & The Child 75317 (295 Pieces)
If you are looking for a quick and inexpensive way to get started in the Lego universe, then BrickHeadz are for you. These sets are quick builds of famous characters ranging from comic books, cartoons, and of course, Star Wars. The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda (pictured here) come in one set that retails for $19.99. You can sometimes find one figure for as low as $5 though.
